Top poker professionals caught ‘multi accounting’

It seems that the online poker community simply cannot escape shocking and often scandalous revelations this year and the latest shocker to emerge concerns the poker professionals who are at the top of their game.

Dan “jungleman12” Cates is one of the highest earning poker players of last year, a truly world class player who has been an inspiration to many in the online poker community. Those same fans were left stunned as it has emerged that Cates has been caught ‘multi accounting’ while playing online. In essence, multi accounting is simply playing online poker under a different alias. Cates has admitted that he has engaged in the practice during an interview that he recently gave with a huge poker insider. 2010′s biggest earner also went on to hint that making use of multiple accounts and aliases was common practice amongst those in the top flight of poker. He also pointed out other top poker professionals who were guilty of the unfavourable practise too; among those he highlighted were Jose “Girrah” Macedo and Haseeb Quereshi. The practice of multi accounting is known simply as ‘scamming’ for others in the online poker community. Professional, world class players pretend to be unknown competitors in order to dupe an unsuspecting (often deep pocketed) player into a false sense of security, before taking advantage of their overwhelming poker skills and using them to fleece the less skilled amateurs. The matter has been made worse by the fact that many of the top players also act as mentors to fledgling poker professionals – Macedo has already admitted to scamming players who he was originally supposed to be coaching about the intricacies of the game.Although Cates is not the first poker professional who has been caught taking advantage of multi accounting, the news has left the poker community stunned – many view the news as another massive blow to the integrity of the online poker industry.
